I have never been a big fan of the Series III saxophones and as the proud owner of a vintage 57xxx Mark VI, parallels drawn between it and the Reference series are like saying Manischewitz and Bordeaux are similar because they both use grapes. And where I still consider myself a fan, I have to be honest that some of the company’s past decisions have left me scratching my head. Whatever the reason, Selmer saxophones were, until recently, my instrument of choice for over 35 years.

Or the fact that just about everyone I have admired has performed on one. Maybe it’s the tone, mechanics, or craftsmanship. I didn't quite know what it was, but I knew it was not a Gibson. There is something different about a Selmer saxophone. It was being advertised at somewhat lower than the normal price and I thought it might be at a lower price because it was damaged or whatever, so I go around to look at it and it just did not strike me as a Gibson, but more as an Asian copy, and it turned out that it was a fake counterfeit Gibson being sold at around 4 times it's original price by a dodgy sort of seller, and I just left it there. I answered a local Ad once about a Gibson Les Paul, and this was just before the fake Gibson's started to become well known on the net and I didn't know that fake Gibson's even existed at that time.

Most players will be able to spot it as a fake, so there is not much use trying to fool them with a fake Selmer or Gibson. So it's all about the logo, and that's why the counterfeiters put the logo on illegally, to rope in gullible buyers. I've seen people buy fake Chinese "no name" guitars just because they have a counterfeit Gibson or Fender logo and I've seen what the guitars were made of and it's not that pretty, very cheap materials and workmanship from backyard operators.Īnd at the same time, there are Chinese made Guitars and Sax's etc sporting a legal distributors name that are usually much better for the same sort of price as the counterfeit fakes. If someone is interested in it just for the logo, maybe they should think about what it actually is, which is a no name Chinese Sax.
